Canine Rehabilitation

A structured approach to getting your dog moving again.

Recovering from an injury or operation can be a challenging time for both dogs and their owners. A structured rehabilitation programme can help your dog progress safely from restricted movement through to returning to their normal activities.

At North Western Vet Physio, we create individual rehabilitation programmes based on your dog's condition, stage of recovery and lifestyle.

Rehabilitation tailored to your dog

No two rehabilitation journeys are the same.

Following a detailed assessment, we identify areas that may require attention, such as reduced muscle strength, restricted joint movement, altered gait, reduced balance or a lack of confidence in movement.

We then create a programme designed around your dog's individual needs.

This may include:

  • Manual physiotherapy techniques

  • Hydrotherapy

  • Strengthening exercises

  • Balance and proprioception work

  • Controlled cardiovascular exercise

  • Stretching and mobility exercises

  • Laser therapy where appropriate

  • Home exercise programmes

  • A hands-off approach to physiotherapy for dogs sensitive to touch

Post-operative rehabilitation

Physiotherapy and rehabilitation can form an important part of recovery following surgery.

A gradual return to exercise allows your dog to rebuild strength and mobility while following the restrictions and guidance provided by your veterinary surgeon.

We work alongside your veterinary team to ensure rehabilitation is appropriate for your dog's stage of recovery.

Progressing towards normal activity

Rehabilitation isn't simply about getting your dog through the first few weeks after an injury.

The aim is to progressively build their strength, mobility and confidence so they can return to the activities that matter to them.

Whether that's going for long walks, returning to agility, getting back to work or simply being comfortable at home, we tailor the rehabilitation process around your dog's individual goals.

A hands-off approach to physiotherapy

We understand that some dogs can be particularly fearful or anxious following an injury, or may feel nervous when approached by unfamiliar people. For these individuals, we offer a hands-off approach to physiotherapy, allowing us to work at a pace that suits them without causing unnecessary stress or discomfort.

By respecting your dog's individual boundaries and using observation, movement assessment and carefully tailored exercises, we can still provide valuable physiotherapy while helping them feel safe and comfortable throughout their sessions.

Our priority is to build trust, confidence and positive experiences, ensuring your dog continues to receive the benefits of physiotherapy in an environment where they feel secure.

Every session is adapted to their individual needs, because we believe effective rehabilitation should work for your dog, not against them.
