Canine Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy can be a valuable addition to your dog's rehabilitation programme, particularly when controlled exercise is required while reducing the impact placed on the limbs and joints.
At North Western Vet Physio, hydrotherapy is incorporated into a wider rehabilitation programme where appropriate. Your dog will be assessed before treatment so that their exercise programme can be tailored to their individual condition, ability and rehabilitation goals.

What are the benefits of hydrotherapy?
Exercising in water can provide a supportive environment for dogs that may struggle with normal land-based exercise.
Depending on your dog's condition, hydrotherapy may help to:
-
Encourage controlled movement
-
Support muscle strength and conditioning
-
Maintain or improve mobility
-
Provide low-impact exercise
-
Support post-operative rehabilitation
-
Improve confidence with movement
-
Complement a wider physiotherapy programme
Hydrotherapy isn't suitable for every dog or every stage of rehabilitation, which is why each patient is assessed individually.
What are the benefits of hydrotherapy?
Our clinic in Barton offers canine physiotherapy alongside hydrotherapy treadmill sessions, providing a dedicated environment for rehabilitation.
If you think your dog could benefit from hydrotherapy, get in touch to discuss their needs and we can advise on the most appropriate next steps.
Combining physiotherapy and hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy can be particularly effective when combined with hands-on physiotherapy and a structured home exercise programme.
Your dog's rehabilitation plan may therefore include a combination of physiotherapy treatments, hydrotherapy sessions and exercises to complete at home.
We monitor your dog's progress throughout their rehabilitation and adjust their programme as they become stronger and more confident.

Swimming vs Underwater Treadmill
At our Barton clinic, we offer underwater treadmill hydrotherapy because it provides a more controlled and adaptable approach to canine rehabilitation. Unlike swimming, the treadmill allows us to adjust the water height, speed and incline to suit your dog’s individual needs and stage of recovery.
The buoyancy of the water reduces pressure on the joints, while the resistance helps build muscle strength, endurance and mobility. As your dog walks, we can also observe their gait, foot placement and weight distribution, making it particularly beneficial for dogs recovering from surgery or injury, or managing arthritis and mobility issues.
Every session can be tailored to your dog’s progress, starting gently and gradually increasing the challenge as their strength and confidence improve. This allows us to provide a personalised approach to rehabilitation, helping your dog move more comfortably and confidently.
