Canine Conditioning & Performance

Helping sporting and working dogs build strength, fitness and resilience.

Sporting and working dogs place significant physical demands on their bodies. Whether your dog competes in agility, flyball, canicross or another dog sport, works as a gundog, sheepdog or search and rescue dog, good physical preparation is an important part of keeping them performing at their best.

At North Western Vet Physio, we provide individual canine conditioning and performance programmes designed around your dog's sport, workload and specific physical requirements.

What is canine conditioning?

Canine conditioning uses structured exercises to develop the physical attributes your dog needs for their individual activity.

A well-designed programme can target areas such as:

  • Strength and muscular development

  • Core stability

  • Balance and coordination

  • Proprioception and body awareness

  • Flexibility and mobility

  • Cardiovascular fitness

  • Power and acceleration

  • Endurance

  • Movement control

The aim is to help your dog develop the physical foundations needed to perform their chosen activity safely and effectively.

Conditioning for sporting dogs

Different sports place different demands on a dog's body.

An agility dog requires the ability to rapidly accelerate, decelerate, turn, jump and land repeatedly. A flyball dog requires speed, explosive power and rapid changes of direction. A gundog combines endurance, strength and coordination across varied terrain.

That's why conditioning programmes should be specific to the individual dog and their sport.

We can assess your dog's current physical abilities and create a programme that complements their training, helping you work on the areas that are most relevant to their performance.

Supporting working dogs

Working dogs can have physically demanding jobs that require them to remain fit, agile and capable over extended periods.

We can develop conditioning programmes for a range of working dogs, including:

  • Gundogs

  • Sheepdogs

  • Search and rescue dogs

  • Working trials dogs

  • Detection dogs

  • Scent work dogs

  • Other physically active working dogs

Programmes can be adapted around your dog's workload, working environment and individual requirements.

Injury Prevention, Physical Preparation and Tailored Conditioning

Good conditioning isn't just about performance; it's also about helping your dog stay fit, strong and physically prepared for the demands of their sport, work or everyday activities.

Developing strength, coordination, mobility and body awareness can help reduce the risk of injury, improve physical ability and support long-term musculoskeletal health. We can also identify areas of weakness, asymmetry or reduced mobility that may benefit from targeted exercises.

Every dog starts from a different point, so we build a programme around their individual needs. Your dog's age, breed, experience, current fitness, sport, training schedule and physical condition will all influence the exercises and level of conditioning recommended.

Depending on your dog's requirements, exercises may include:

  • Balance and stability work

  • Cavaletti pole exercises

  • Controlled strengthening exercises

  • Core activation

  • Proprioception exercises

  • Mobility exercises

  • Controlled cardiovascular conditioning

  • Sport-specific movement exercises

All exercises are demonstrated and explained, giving you the confidence to incorporate them into your dog's regular training routine and continue building on their progress between sessions.

Conditioning should complement, rather than replace, appropriate veterinary care. If your dog has an existing injury or diagnosed condition, we can work alongside your veterinary team to ensure their exercise programme is safe, suitable and appropriate for their individual needs.

Supporting Performance at Every Level

Conditioning isn't just for competitive dogs. It can benefit dogs at every stage, whether you're preparing a young dog for their first competition, helping an experienced athlete maintain their physical condition or simply wanting to give your active dog a stronger physical foundation.

A tailored conditioning programme can complement your dog's normal training, helping develop the strength, coordination, mobility and physical confidence needed to perform at their best.

Your dog's training develops their skills, while conditioning helps build the physical foundations that allow them to use those skills effectively. By focusing on your dog's individual sport, work or performance goals, we can create a structured programme that supports their development, maintains their physical fitness and helps them get the most out of their activities.

At North Western Vet Physio, we can help you develop a canine conditioning and performance programme tailored to your dog's individual needs and goals.
